Our Story
In May of 2007 while at our County 4-H Field Day, our oldest daughter , Anika, spent much of the day playing with baby dairy goats. She was excelling at showing poultry but was smitten by the goat bug that day. At the age of 10, she knew she couldn't raise a goat that was bound for the butcher, and as a busy ballerina and dancer, she knew she didn't have time to milk a dairy goat 2 times a day. We had a couple of friends that wanted to start a Pygmy Goat project and it sounded perfect to our family.
For her 11th birthday in April, she received her first 2 Pygmies, a 2 month old doe and a wether that were half siblings. She promptly named them after her favorite book characters--Nancy Drew and Ned Nickerson. Her cute little project has now grown into her whole family owning and showing Pygmies, plus, for several years, we had the addition of a Boer goat herd.
In 2015, Anika started college and in 2021 earned her Master's Degree in Ag Communication and Extension Work at U of Arkansas. Her younger sister, Holly, took off with the Pygmy project, finishing her last youth show at the Orange County Fair in August 2019, with a clean sweep (Senior Showmanship winner, Best Wether, Grand Champion Doe, and Grand Champion Buck). Soon after that, she started at Fresno State as a Dairy Science major and registered her own herd name with NPGA. Beginning in January 2020 she now has kids under her LegenDairy Pygmies herd name and can't wait to see them in the showring.
Each year we strive to improve the structure and genetics of our herds and to continue to learn more about their health and well-being. We continue to help educate other 4-Hers and anyone interested in Pygmies in our county and state. We feel truly blessed to be a part of the Pygmy goat family in CA since most of the breeders and judges care so much about educating new families.
